This photo is a scanned reprint from an original shot from the Yale-China Association archives. The photo is also featured in the book, "The Yale-China Association: A Centennial History," by Nancy E. Chapman with Jessica C. Plumb. In the book, Chapman writes, "Physical fitness had not been stressed in Chinese elite culture, and the early [Yale-in-China Bachelors] found their students lacking in strength and endurance. With the move to the new campus, Yale-in-China finally had sufficient facilities for an active sports program, and students at the Yali Middle School in particular proved themselves avid athletes, winning numerous province-wide soccer championships. In 1935 and 1936 trans-Pacific track meets were even organized between Yali Middle School and Hillhouse High School in New Haven, with the results exchanged by cable."
