Description
The Market House Restaurant was established in 1982 by three women, and was located on the corner of Perry and Commerce Street. At that time it was known as The Market House Tavern and served a very limited menu. Some of the original items can still be found on the menu today; the homemade Crab Louis salad, the 1/2 pound Tavern Burger, the Open Face Steak Sandwich, along with Beer Battered Onion Rings and the best Oven Roasted Reuben you'll find in the Mid West.
.In 1984 The Market House Tavern relocated to 204 Perry Street, off the cobblestones. In 1993 the 'garden room' was added. In 2000 the restaurant went non smoking and added Restaurant to it's name. Situated in one of the oldest buildings in Galena, the building is constructed of "Galena" brick and the main dinning room still has the original tin ceiling. The building was built by James Speer and S.B. Herron Contractors in 1836, and was then known as the "Captain Rueben Brush Building".
