Description

This riveting piece depicting the traditional "End of the Trail," by Solar Artist Reverend Lorin Dante, was drawn on birch veneer 17 years ago in Kailua-Kona, HI.  Using a most unique media, Rev. Dante utilized solar power and a magnifying glass to burn the image into the wood.  He has been drawing with the sun for over 25 years.

The front of the artwork reflects a Native American slumped over his exhausted horse and carrying a spear pointing down.  Just to the left, an eagle can be seen flying toward the sun.  Cut into the wood above the drawing, a mirror has been inserted.  At each top corner, arrowheads were also drawn.

The back of the piece has the artist's signature "L. Dante" and the date "1990."  There is also a quadrant calendar, with a mark in the top-right reflecting the month.

Weighing approximately 5 pounds, the dimensions are 12 1/4" W X 22" L X 3/4" H.

Rev. Dante's pictures generally portray proud Indians, wolves and eagles, and the natural beauty of the green earth.  He became interested in American Indian history after he first heard about Ishi, the last man of the Yahi Indian tribe who gave himself up in Oroville in 1911.  Part of his fascination also comes from family history. His great-grandmother was a Paiute Indian and was found without her tribe on the Mormon trail, eventually integrated into the white system.
