Description

A century ago, Brooklyn was home to the most popular resort in the United States. Coney Island was a big part of that attraction. This 2 1/2 hour walk will take you back past the sites of Dreamland (1904-1911), Luna Park (1903-1944), and Steeplechase Park (1897-1964). Old photos will show you what they looked like. You will learn about the three major roller coasters: the Tornado, the Thunderbolt and of course the Cyclone (which is now in its 80th year). We will find out how Coney Island got its name and how the frankfurter, hot dog, and hamburger were also named. Who brought the frankfurter to Coney Island? It wasn't Nathan! You will be surprised to find out who gave Nathan Handwerker the idea to open up his famous hot dog stand in 1916. You will also find out what famous actors and composers started their careers in Coney Island. Coney Island went through many years of decline but is now in the process of a major makeover. You will also visit the Brooklyn Baseball Museum at Keyspan Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, a New York Mets minor league team. And much more! Date of tour and group size is subject to availability and must be mutually agreed upon.
