Description
Take a walking tour of old Victorian Flatbush, Brooklyn! Your stroll into the past will take you through one of New York City's premier, turn of the century, Victorian communities in Flatbush. Your group will walk through parts of four of the eleven Victorian communities, including: Ditmas Park (designated a NYC Historic District in 1981), Ditmas Park West, Beverley Square West, and Prospect Park South (designated a NYC Historic District in 1978). You will find out who developed these communities a century ago, and who some of the original homeowners were. This tour will take you past the homes of Nellie Bly, Charles Stillwell, composer Arthur Schwartz ("Dancing in the Dark, That's Entertainment"), the Guggenheim "honeymoon cottage," as well as several other noteworthy homes. You will see two late 19th century barns on Rugby Road and the homes that were used in the filming of "Sophie's Choice" and "Reversal of Fortune." The architectural styles of the area range from Victorian, Queen Anne, Colonial, Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, Tudor, Japanese "Cottage" and Japanese Tudor, among others. Your group will also pass the historic, Flatbush Tompkins Congregational Church and Temple Beth Emeth v'Ohr Progressive Shaari Zedek, the oldest reform Jewish congregation in Flatbush, dating back to 1911. Bring your camera! The 2 3/4 hour tour covers the northern part of the Victorian Flatbush neighborhood. Date and group size are subject to availability and must be mutually agreed upon.
