Description
This is an important piece of Notre Dame sports memorobilia. Sports Illustrated, November 8 1973 cover story entitled "Notre Dame Stacks Up USC"
Cover photo is among the most famous sports photos of Notre Dame football in the modern era. In the photo, Ross Browner, Drew Mahilcic and Gary Potempa crush Anthony Davis of USC in Notre Dame Stadium.
Davis had scored six touchdowns one year earlier in the Coliseum in Notre Dame's most infamous second half collapse. In preparation for the 1973 game, Notre Dame students taped photographs of Davis on campus sidewalks. On his first carry, after a two yard gain, Davis was hit hard by Greg Collins and greeted by safety Tim Rudnick, "This is not the Coliseum; welcome to Notre Dame".
The Irish defeated USC 23-24 and USC coach John McKay admitted leaving Notre Dame stadium whistling the Victory March.
Story contains a photo of Eric Penick breaking his 85 yard run touchdown from scrimmage to take the Irish to an insurmountable two touchdown lead. After the game Penick was asked why he didn't slide into the end zone on his knees as was the custom of USC running backs of the day. "On my knees?", he said in disgust, "I'm no hot dog; this is Notre Dame."
Notre Dame went on to win the undisputed national championship.
Special Instructions
You have to see this magazine to appreciate its value to your ND football memorobilia collection. Magazine is in like new condition.
As a unique feature of authenticity, the address label is clearly legible and addressed to George Beinfang, Dallas attorney, then a young, slender Notre Dame sophomore, 254 Morissey Hall, Notre Dame, IN. Whether the misspelling of Bienfang's last name adds addtional appeal to this article is unknown by the Club.
