Description
This painting, No. 75 from the ongoing "First Person Series", is a unique variation on the theme of the "I". Each painting in the series begins by tracing the end of a steel I-beam on a similar size and format of paper. The "I" functions both as an abstract figure and a symbol of the self while providing the basis for endlessly fluctuating compositions. The series maintains its sense of limits and identity through the common elements of stark black ink, the "I" as building block, and a common scale and format. Each painting has a distinct autobiographical character and emotion ranging from humor to tragedy. No. 75 includes references to Marcel Duchamps' "Nude Descending a Staircase" and also to Dr. Seuss's parades of marching creatures. Since they were conceived in 1999, the paintings have been designed, not just as individuals, but also to function as groups in a more complex wall installation structure. As part of an installation format the frame of this painting (unstained maple and Plexiglas) is identical to the others of the series and is considered integral to the work itself.
This painting was in Waltham Mills Artists' Association exhibit at the Attleboro Arts Museum in 2007.
25" x 32 3/4".
Elizabeth Michelman received an award for "works on paper" from the Massachusetts Cultural Council in 2000 for the earliest works in this series. Her interdisciplinary conceptual works include installation, sculpture, video, poetry, and painting. She has a studio with Riverstreet Artists in Waltham, MA.
