IRMA CERESE is a painter of contemporary expressive landscapes which often border on the abstract, with a primary focus on overall color atmosphere. Although nature-based, her work is primarily formal in that it is intended to be a compelling visual experience in its own right. She uses the fundamentals of landscape - trees, sky, ground, buildings - as the elements that give structure to the image and present a point of reference for the viewer. Much is improvised and some amorphous shapes are only loosely tethered to the perceived world. Educated at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she worked in New York City for many years and then resumed painting in Massachusetts after a fifteen year hiatus. Her work can be seen in several New England galleries.
