The Wednesday Upbeat! series features music in an informal setting, a broad repertoire, and premieres of works new to Maine and the world. Festival artists, composers, and program annotator Will Hertz introduce the works and answer questions, adding to the casual atmosphere.

Highlights of the 2007 Upbeat! series will include:

Works by composers in residence Roberto Sierra (Clarinet Sonata) and Robert Beaser (Souvenir for Clarinet and Piano), both performed by Avery Fisher award-winning clarinetist Igor Begelman and Montreal prize winner Peter Basquin; performances by renowned Maine pianist Frank Glazer of Chopin’s Polonaise Fantasy in A flat Major, Op. 61 and Fantasy in F Minor, Op. 49, and Dvořák’s Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81 with a Bowdoin Festival faculty ensemble; a presentation of “Dim Sum”, works by contemporary Chinese composers, by the Ying Quartet; performance of original works for piano by Maine Arts Commission fellowship winner Peter Dembski; George Crumb’s Voice of the Whale with flutist Joshua Smith, cellist Andre Emelianoff, and Peter Basquin; and many additional works from the classical traditional.
