Conrad Atkinson was born in Cumbria, England in 1940 and earned his degrees from Carlisle College of Art, Liverpool College of Art, and the Royal Academy Schools. He is one of Britain’s most influential artists, and has received international recognition, where he speaks, teaches, collaborates, and exhibits around the world. But the heart of his practice – both tactically and metaphorically – comes from his birthplace, the northern town of Cleator Moor. Over the last twenty-five years, Atkinson’s work has married the traditional mimetic impulse – reproducing the world so as to better understand it – with the contemporary urge to evaluate data. Thus, he has juxtaposed pay-packets with ticker-tape; related videotaped confessionals to literature’s classics; and “remade” objects from newspapers to clothes to land mines.
