Sandow Birk, a native of Southern California, examines social issues, including inner city violence, graffiti, politics, travel, prisons, surfing and skateboarding in his explosive energetic and vibrant paintings. Having a lengthy exhibition history, Birk was a recipient of an NEA International Travel Grant to Mexico City in 1995, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1996, and a Fulbright Fellowship to Rio de Janeiro in 1997. In 1999 he was awarded a Getty Fellowship for painting, followed by a City of Los Angeles (COLA) Fellowship in 2001. He has also worked on film projects, such as Dante’s Inferno, which has been featured at several international film festivals in 2006-07. Select collections include San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Harvard University Art Museums, and San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. He is currently living and working in Los Angeles.
