Roy Lichtenstein, a name synonymous with Pop Art, was born in New York City in 1923 and received a degree in fine arts from Ohio State University. He taught at Ohio State University and then at Rutgers University until his work garnered international attention. One of the first artists to turn to pop culture for his imagery, Lichtenstein worked with stencils producing rows of oversized ben-day dots, inspired by commercial advertising, romance comics and cartoons. Although he prepared and executed his works painstakingly, he wanted the finished product to look machine-made, with brush strokes that were unnoticed. In 1996 the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., became the largest recipient of the artist’s work when he donated 154 prints and two books. Lichtenstein donated the paper plates to the University Art Museum in 1977, which currently is the sole repository. Lichtenstein passed away in 1997.
