Von Sumner grew up in San Francisco, California, and earned both a B.A. in Art and M.F.A. in Painting from the University of California at Davis. He moved to New York in 2000, where he worked for galleries and museums, including the Guggenheim Museum. In 2002, he moved back to California, this time settling down in Southern California. Sumner has regularly exhibited nationally and internationally since 1997, and his work is included in significant private collections. In 2005, he became a founding member of the L.A.-based group of painters known as “Pharmaka,” who built and operate a non-profit exhibition space devoted to contemporary painting in downtown Los Angeles. He currently lives and works in Long Beach.
