Laura Hipke was born in 1958 in San Francisco, California. She is largely self-taught, but she briefly attended the California Institute of the Arts when she was sixteen years old. Hipke’s work is driven by a desire to have the viewer search her paintings for an answer – not just to find an answer, but to want to. Her pieces are part of an ongoing project, which began in 2003, as a quest for what dwells within. She currently resides in Glendale, California with her husband and three children, and works in Montrose, California, where her studio is located.
