Michael Stearns was born in San Diego, California, and began his education in painting when he was nine years old. He continued his studies in art at California State University, Los Angeles, and later became a partner in a ceramics studio in Long Beach, California, where he taught ceramics as well as painting and drawing. His acrylic paintings are included in exhibitions all over the United States. He took a twenty-seven year hiatus from art to become a fireman, eventually becoming Captain of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. He also became a prominent businessman in the Long Beach community. He has returned to painting and currently owns Gallery 33 East in Long Beach.
