Lynda Benglis was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1941, and studied art and philosophy at McNeese College, graduating in 1963. She moved to New York and continued her studies at the Brooklyn Museum School of Art. Benglis admired and was influenced by the work of the Abstract Expressionists, particularly that of Franz Kline. She became best known for confronting issues that were raised by feminist theory and conveyed that through her use of unconventional materials as a video artist, photographer, and sculptor. She has also experimented with printmaking, cast paper, drawing, ceramics, and painting. Her public work can be found all over the United States, and in particular in the collections of prestigious museums such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
