Peter Voulkos was known as an Abstract Expressionist of
ceramics. His work, a synthesis of painting, drawing,
sculpture, collage and pottery, played a significant role
in raising the profile of ceramics. Voulkos’ work can be
found in collections worldwide, including the prestigious
Courtauld Gallery in the U.K. and the Smithsonian Museum
of American Art. The winner of numerous awards such as the
Rodin Museum Prize at the 1st Paris Bienale and the
Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement from
the College Art Association, Voulkos was the recipient of
Honorary Doctorates from universities throughout the
country.
