Description
Transportation provided by the high bidder. The amount of walking is up to the discretion of the high bidder. This tour can be done at a leisurely pace with minimal walking involved.
Join Bob Young for a 6-8 hour tour along the route taken by Thoreau and companion Richard Fuller as they walked from Concord to Wachusett in 1842. Relive times past and experience Thoreau's world as you follow the words of the essay all the way to the summit. Winning bid also receives a CDROM of scenes along the route in PowerPoint format.
Bob has conducted extensive research to define the route; he completed his study by re-enacting the walk including overnight stops in West Sterling and on the summit - exactly as reflected in the essay.
Starting in Concord, you will pass through Acton, Stow, Bolton, Lancaster, Sterling, West Sterling, and East Princeton enroute to Mt. Wachusett. Visit scenes along the route: South Bridge crossing the Sudbury, the Old Road to Stow at Damon's Mills, Great Brook, Wataquadock Hill where they rested for lunch, the inn by the Stillwater River where they stayed for the first night, the deep ravine in East Princeton, and more. From the Base of the Mountain, walk (or drive) to the summit and explore as did Thoreau and Fuller. Learn the mystery of the heavy tent which they carried and the source of the essay's signature line: "Wachusett is, in fact, the observatory of the state."
