About the CFA® Designation

If you are serious about a career in finance, accounting or business, consider pursuing your CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst®) designation, the gold standard for investment professionals. The CFA charter is a symbol of distinction and excellence in investment management and a standard for measuring competence and integrity in the field. It is also the most respected and valued credential in the global finance community, and is increasingly viewed by many as a passport to entry into, and advancement within, investment management and corporate finance professions.

Careers

Progression toward your CFA charter with the successful completion of one or more examinations shows existing and potential employers you are serious about your investment management career. Virtually every major financial services firm, consultant, bank, brokerage and insurance company in the world employs CFA charterholders, recognizing the commitment to knowledge, professional competence and high ethical standards the charter accompanies. Many firms frequently hire individuals who are still CFA candidates, especially if they have passed one of three CFA examinations. Common occupations of charterholders include equity and fixed-income analysts, investment bankers, portfolio and hedge fund managers, and investment advisors. And it doesn’t stop there. A CFA charter may also enhance your opportunities for senior level positions. According to a recent charterholder survey administered by the CFA Institute, 11% of Charterholders were CEOs, Chairmen, Principals, CIOs and CFOs.

Compensation

The CFA designation is likely to have a big impact on your compensation, as charterholders have been shown to earn substantially more than those without the charter.

The above noted survey of more than 16,000 CFA Institute members in select countries around the world demonstrated that the total pay gap is substantial--regardless of experience. In fact, those U.S. respondents with their CFA designation were found to earn 54% more than those without it, and out-earned those with an M.B.A. by 18%. Gaps such as these were observed in all of the major countries evaluated. Additionally:

  • With the CFA designation comes better career opportunities. 88% of those surveyed stated the CFA charter expanded their career opportunities or chances for promotion.
  • Corporate attitudes continue to reaffirm the charter's desirability. 67% of those surveyed stated their organizations either require or encourage investment professionals to obtain their CFA charter.
  • Notable compensation differences were observed by country. For example, median 2005 U.S. compensation was $170,000, and $240,000 for those with 10+ years of experience. Those with 5+ years of experience reported median total U.S. compensation of $200K. Canadian median 2005 compensation was roughly $100,762 (in US Dollars) and almost $170,000 for those with 10+ years of experience.
