José Mateo Ballet Theatre is a nonprofit professional performance company and school.

Founded in 1986, the organization has gained a distinctive reputation for its innovative programming, artistic excellence, and extensive community outreach. After recently signing a 41-year lease with the National Historic Landmark Old Cambridge Baptist Church in Harvard Square, JMBT started a renovation project to transform this architectural gem into a world-class dance and performance space.

The 20-member company regularly presents original works and new interpretations of classical ballets choreographed by Mr. Mateo.

It is distinguished as the only ballet company in New England to produce an entire repertory of original works by its own resident choreographer. After performing at Boston's Emerson Majestic Theatre for a decade, the company has been based at the Sanctuary Theatre in Harvard Square since 2001.
