This original, circa-1880 cabinet features intricate carvings and is designed to let air circulate around stored fruits and vegetables without admitting light. The middle drawers were used for primary storage while the lower compartments held live fowl waiting to be the main course at dinner! The wood is Chinese elm and, as you can see, the red lacquer finish has taken on a rich, warm patina over the decades. This cabinet was a proud possession of a wealthy family in China's eastern Joe-Er Jung province.
