This work captures a bit of Wickford's beauty, painted by a woman who has seen so much of the world. Sister Joel was born in Russia, emigrated to China at 3, was schooled by the missionaries, and later studied art with the Russian painter Lobanov. She entered the missionaries herself in Peking in 1950 and taught art in an international school until 1966 when revolting Red Guards forced out most foreign intellectuals.
