Description

The lucky winner of this quilt will have a keepsake to pass on L’Dor V’Dor (generation to generation).

The Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:
May his memory be a blessing.

The students of 1-Blue contributed two drawings to this project: the border of each quilt panel; and an illustration of one aspect of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s, life and legacy.

The Dr. King drawings showcase the children’s depth of learning and empathy and exemplify values our school community promotes: social justice and righteous action.

The quilt—with panels sewn onto fabric remnants—reminds us of the humble beginnings of many of our Jewish relatives who found economic stability in this, their adopted homeland, via the rag trade. The medium itself is also the message: quilts were used by slaves to impart coded messages to other slaves about planned rebellions and escapes. This quilt’s message (written in Hebrew in the last two panels) is a reminder to strive for peace in our hearts and in the world.
