Passionate about his subject, Tenney has a good handle on the human condition--in particular, the godlessness of the modern era and our preoccupation with sensuality and immediate gratification. He skillfully places 12 types of prayer in historical and biblical contexts. Though he's in touch with the contemporary resistance to prayer, some of his language suggests a kind of one-sided adoration of the Almighty that will seem out-of-date to people who desire a more conversational or collaborative connection with God. The traditional casting of these ideas will appeal more to single-minded worshipers of God than to listeners whose religious beliefs are but one part of their personal development.
