He is the author of Baseball's Great Experiment: Jackie Robinson and His Legacy, Past Time: Baseball as History and numerous essays and articles. He has appeared frequently as a commentator on radio and television. His expertise includes the integration of baseball and the Negro Leagues, but he is equally at home discussing the broad range of baseball history and the current game as well.
