Salvador Dali: Flamboyant, egocentric, enigmatic. His ingenious talent, layered with virtuosity and technical brilliance, was rivaled only by his unforgettable personality. Throughout his long career, Dali tirelessly explored new media and theories. He created world famous paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, jewelry, films and books, besides delving into molecular biology and nuclear physics. At the time of his death in 1989, he ranked with his fellow Spaniard, Pablo Picasso, as one of the two most influential and prolific figures in modern art.
Lithograph: In this process the artist draws an image onto a stone, aluminum or zinc plate with a greasy crayon. Water is then applied and ink is spread over the surface. The ink stays on the greasy image but the remainder of the surface, covered in water, repels the ink. The paper is then placed on top of the plate and the image is absorbed. A finite number of copies are made, and then the plate is destroyed.
Dali and Lithographs: Dali was a prolific artist who used many techniques to produce singular and multiple copies of his art: dry point, engraving, etching, woodcut, heliogravure, and lithograph. He spread the bounty to his admirers (and to himself) by creating many pieces for lithography. This item is an numbered Dali lithograph, in which the artist's signature is part of the lithograph, and the print and set numbers are penciled individually on the face of the piece.
Chevalier: The image and spirit of the Chevalier often appears in Dali’s work. It is a French title originally equivalent to the English knight. Later the title chevalier came to be used in a variety of senses not always denoting membership in any order of chivalry; it was frequently used by men of noble birth or noble pretensions who could not claim any of the standard territorial titles. Dali depicted many knights on horses, describing them as Chevalier. In this lithograph, he uses the term to describe a handsome and self-satisfied nobleman.
