Description

This beautiful tealight holder is made of Manitoba Maple, with an unusual red section.  Hand-turned by prize-winning Ontario woodturner Jim Lorriman, who names it The Heart of the Matter.  4 3/4" in diameter, 3" tall.  Includes a beeswax tealight.

Here is part of Jim's artistic statement:

"A large part of my work is giving new life to old, historical or sentimental pieces of wood. I have made bowls, vases and platters from doors and window frames, docks, flooring, stair railings, joists, decks, cottages, siding, etc. Sometimes I get wood beams from buildings that were built 100 to 150 years ago from wood from trees that may have been more than 100 years old. The wood may have come from tree species seen today but the trees grew more slowly producing different characteristics; the grain is tighter and the wood turns differently and finishes to a rich colour.  I have a sense of wonder when working with such wood. I try to imagine the dark, quiet forests where these trees were seedlings. The white man and even the Indian were rare visitors and yet now, in the 21st century, this wood takes on new life.

"The process is ongoing. I am always finding new pieces of wood that inspire me. Every now and then, someone will drop off a piece of wood. I acquire wood faster than I can turn it but I love being surrounded by it. As I go to the studio each day, I touch some of the pieces that are waiting their turn."
