Description
One full scholarship for Young Writers Creative Writing Program at the University of Pittsburgh. For students entering 4th - 8th grade. July 7 - 18, 2008. Monday - Friday. 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Recipient must register by May 31, 2008.
YWI is for young people who like to write, and who want to develop their craft in a community of writers. Program highlights include visiting writers, field trips, readings of student writing and publication in anthologies and chapbooks.
YWI is a 30-hour program structured according to grade level.
Two teachers work with each group of 20 students.
Teachers are Fellows of the Western Pennylvania Writing Project or graduate student instructors in the University of Pittsburgh's Creative Writing Program.
Instruction includes
- free-writing
- exercises
- reading work aloud in response groups
- revision through multiple drafts.
Students polish selected pieces for publication in group anthologies or chapbooks (high school).
In the community of writers that YWI creates, students can challenge themselves, give and receive feedback on new and revised writing. They can think of themselves as writers.
Young writers have the opportunity to explore writing in a variety of genres, including creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry.
YWI culminates with a reading and celebration of writing by students and teachers.
