The Cerrito Theater, located on San Pablo Avenue near the corner of Central Avenue in El Cerrito, was a local movie house that residents thought was lost forever. Built in the art deco style and decorated with murals and etched glass, the theater operated from 1937 into the 1960s.

In 2001 local residents were surprised to find that the murals, glass and decor of the theater had been preserved during the thirty years the building had been used as a furniture warehouse. A community group quickly formed to save the theater. It reopened its doors on November 1, 2006.

The Parkway Speakeasy has the colorful character of a neighborhood theater (it's been in operation off and on in this location since its founding in 1926, and the original decor has been retained and preserved), as well as the laid-back escape value of an "indoor" drive-in. It is the anti multi-plex.

A "Speakeasy" theater is a one-stop entertainment destination that also serves as a nexus for the diverse demographics of its eclectic environs. Delicious food items are available, including pizzas, pastas, sandwiches and salads, as well as beer and wine, to enjoy in a comfortable, living room/nightclub environment while watching the recent Hollywood hits, classics, obscure cult favorites, local films, special benefit screenings, and more. Of course the ever popular Baby Brigade and 2 for 1 Wednesdays are also going strong.
