In 1990 Agustin and Valeria Huneeus purchased 280 acres in the heart of Rutherford and christened it Quintessa, alluding to the five dramatic hills and five distinct microclimates included in the property's diverse geography and their belief that this property was destined to be the quintessential wine estate. The wine is a blend of the best vineyard lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, all grown on the estate's 170 acres of vineyards.

"It is hard not to be taken in by the lovely, sweet oak perfumes that take the early lead here, yet there is plenty of bright, young fruit beneath its vanillin veneer, and the wine proves to be fairly complete" (CG 90).
