Located in Tuscany's sangiovese-growing region, Brunello di Montalcino is the only wine required to be made entirely, and only, from the sangiovese grape. The Italian DOCG laws require that these Sangioveses stay in cask for at least 24 months and are not released for at least four years. A "riserva" is crafted only in exceptional years, and requires an additional year of aging, usually in the bottle.

With only 550 cases produced, the 1999 Casisano-Colombaio Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is "...Full-bodied, with big, silky tannins and a long, rich fruit, chocolate and vanilla aftertaste. Best wine ever from here." (WS 95).
