Take a drive toward Wilmington to enjoy these unique museums and garden. The Brandywine River Museum is home to one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of works by N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth, three generations of artists who embody the family’s distinctive artistic legacy. The museum features illustrations by Charles Dana Gibson, Rockwell Kent and Rose O’Neill, as well as landscapes of William Trost Richards and Jasper Cropsey; still life by George Cope, William Harnett, and John F. Peto; and paintings by Horace Pippin and J.D. Chalfant.
Winterthur's 1,000-acre country estate encompasses rolling hills, streams, meadows, and forests. Founder Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969) developed an appreciation of nature as a boy that served as the basis for his life's work in the garden. He selected the choicest plants from around the world to enhance the natural setting, arranging them in lyrical color combinations and carefully orchestrating a succession of bloom from late January to November. Du Pont translated his love of the land into a unified work of art that embodies a romantic vision of nature's beauty. The Winterthur galleries feature popular American design styles between 1640 and 1860. Explore furniture, textiles, paintings, metalworks, ceramics and glass. Visit the Dominy Clock Shop and Woodworking Shop to see a reconstruction of the shops that existed from the mid 1700s to the mid 1800s.
In 1906, Pierre S. du Pont purchased the Peirce Arboretum to save its trees from being cut for lumber. Over the next nearly half century, Mr. du Pont developed Longwood Gardens into what it is today, a magnificent horticultural showplace.
Longwood Gardens encompasses 1,050 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows. Enjoy over 11,000 types of plants, more fountains than any other garden in the US, educational and visitor programming including horticultural programs, a wine and jazz festival, and over 400 performances a year.
