Artist's Statement about "View, Central Park":
"This photograph was made during a Nor'easter that delivered a prolonged deluge of rain. At the height of the storm, the park was virtually deserted save for the workers strategically placing sand bags in an effort to help channel the potentially destructive runoff. Just before leaving, the sky lightened to reveal this view, the final exposure of the day."
Artist's Statement:
"My approach has always been highly intuitive, using traditional methods, producing straight photography without manipulation. While craft is an important aspect, the creativity lies in the 'seeing.' This is always the greatest difficulty.
"My subject matter is whatever interests me. Trees are a favoriate, as is almost anything old, especially with signs of heavy use and character. As vital as the subject matter is, I am very often drawn by the quality of light which can bring me back to a scene, sometimes on several occasions. Even the familiar can be literally transformed under the right conditions.
"Much of my work has been done with the classic wooden view camera, ranging in negative size from 4x5" all the way up to 16X20"....These cameras engender a deliberate, contemplative way of photographing, but the effort produces negatives rich with incredible detail and marvelous tones, which can produce contact prints of absolutely stunning beauty."
