Paston, who was born in Philadelphia, holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Philadelphia Museum College of Art, and a Master of Fine Arts and PhD from Columbia University.  After teaching in Philadelphia, New York and Illinois, he joined the UMass Amherst Art Department in 1970. 

His work includes painting, printmaking, graphic design and sculpture and it has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.  In recent years, Paston has explored less traditional art mediums, especially the use of computers as a tool for artistic expression and assemblage.

His series of work called “The Magic Within” are assemblages combining not only images he made on the computer but bits and pieces of the computer itself.  Paston said that some of the assemblages have obvious themes while others may require a closer look. He said that they will appeal to those who enjoy a challenge, a mystery, and imaginative adventure or just plain fun.
