Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art will showcase the best of American Modernism beginning February 8 through October 15, 2008. Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), the exhibition will feature masterpieces by American modernists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Stuart Davis, Marsden Hartley, Arshile Gorky and others.

The collection is devoted to American artists who worked during a dynamic period in American art. The period, known as American Modernism, began at the turn of the 20th century and reached its pinnacle between World War I and World War II. During this time, which had been dominated by Impressionism, many younger artists responded in a variety of ways to the modern age. Celebrated artists such as O’Keeffe began experimenting with painting by offering a subjective take on the traditional subject matter of still life and landscape. Some of the artists explored the natural world with abstract forms. Modernism was bold, new, and controversial no matter which of these styles an artist employed.
