Description

8" square dye sublimation tiles. The image is printed onto a film. The film gets baked into a specially treated tile. The image is just like a photo and the tile itself needs to be treated like a piece of art. It scratches easily and can't be placed in direct sunlight. They can be displayed on a little table easel or hung on the wall.

About the Artist: Andrea Strongwater '70

I always knew what I wanted to convey in my artwork about Judaism; complexity, richness, clarity, liveliness, joy and an over riding feeling of mysticism, the wonderful something in the world we can't exactly define. I live in New York City where the visual resources for just about everything are incredibly rich and available. Before I managed to find a day to go to the Jewish Museum or the Library at the Jewish Theological Seminary to look at things, I stopped in synagogues along the routes of my everyday errands and found showcase after showcase of silver objects from Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. Those finds confirmed that what I was thinking about could work. A visit to Westside Judaica, a neighborhood store, turned up a gorgeous coffee table book chronicling Jewish paper cutouts that were created from the late 18th century through about 1920. The cutouts, some similar to Victorian era silhouettes, gave me a framework and I dove into painting twelve images that would all work together as a calendar. The working premise was a calendar, but as you can see, each image stands on its own and can be used in many ways. Maybe someday it will be a calendar, but for now I am happy if the art conveys good things about being Jewish and the rhythm of Jewish life.
