Cloisonne is the term used to describe a method of decorating metal with enamel. Metal filaments (wire or thin strips of metal known as the cloisons)are fused to the surface of an object to outline a design which is then filled with enamel paste. The name cloisonne comes from the French word meaning "to partition." Although it probably originated in the Middle East, the French, Japanese and Chinese have perfected this art form.
