Description
The Richard Helms Collection, "A Life in Intelligence"
The CIA’s Office of Information Management Services and the Center for The Study of Intelligence has gathered a broad array of rare and formerly classified material that recently had been made available for the first time ever.
At the recent Symposium that AFIO had been invited to was held on April 28 at Georgetown University. The Central Intelligence Agency, the Georgetown University Library Associates and the GeorgetownUniversity Center for Peace and Security Studies developed the event that focused on the life and career of former DCI and Ambassador to Iran, Richard Helms.
In conjunction with this symposium, the CIA released newly declassified documents pertaining to the Helms era.
The CIA document release occurred in conjunction with the recent acquisition and cataloging of the personal papers of Richard Helms by the Special Collections Research Center at the Georgetown University Library. This combined collection provided new insights -- the most complete picture of Richard Helms ever assembled -- into the official life of this dedicated public official and his private life as a dedicated husband and father.
Researchers now have the opportunity to understand the significant contributions Helms made to his country, and his dedication to service, both public and private.
This material includes:
• The Helms correspondence – 812 documents, spanning critical events in US foreign
Policy.
• CIA publications on Helms – such as the internal biography on Director Helms,
George Tenet’s eulogy for Helms, and various Studies of Intelligence articles on the
late Director.
• In his own words – oral interviews and speeches given by Helms.
• A video of Helms addressing new CIA officers, never before seen outside the halls of
Agency.
• Photos of Helms as Director, meeting with various Presidents.
• As an added bonus, the CIA has released 21 historical studies examining the organization of the Intelligence Community, and evaluations of proposals for reorganization and reform.
