CONSULTANT BIO:  Mary Ellen Stumpf has been in the non-profit sector for more than 32 years, primarily in fund development (earned income and philanthropic support).  She brings to the APVA extensive background in fundraising regionally, nationally and internationally for cultural and historic entities.  She has served APVA Preservation Virginia for 14 years as a special contractor in a range of capacities including overall organizational assessment, planning and transformation; strategic planning and management; governance and board development; and especially fund development. With her guidance and management, APVA Preservation Virginia has built a successful comprehensive statewide Development Program that includes The Annual Fund, Special and Major Gifts, Grants, Public Support, Sponsorships, Planned Gifts and Endowment.  In 1998, she helped reverse a declining Membership Program by modernizing systems and enhancing communications, member categories and benefits for both traditional and new audiences.  She has primarily served as director of a two-phased Campaign for Historic Jamestowne garnering close to $55,000,000 to date toward the master plan goal of $63,000,000.  She has helped grow reserves and endowment for the overall organization and establish an endowment fund for Historic Jamestowne.  For her professional service and ethics, she has been honored by the Virginia Association of Fundraising Executives, and the National Conference on Community and Justice; and named an Outstanding Woman in Philanthropy by the National Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.  She holds a master’s degree in Elizabethan Literature, University of Toronto; and a bachelor’s degree in both Cultural History and Literature, Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame.  She also has Museum Management training on the graduate school level.
