Description

A family tour (up to 6; see specifics below) of the Royall House and Slave Quarters during their 2008 centennial season.  All guided tours include access to the archaeological exhibit.
The Royall House and Slave Quarters in Medford, Massachusetts, were built in 1732-1737.  The property is a National Historic Landmark preserved and interpreted by the nonprofit Royall House Association, founded in 1908 and currently celebrating its centennial year.
Located just 15 minutes north of Boston, the House is one of the finest 18th century buildings in New England; the Slave Quarters is the only such structure in the Northern United States. Together, these unique structures tell the intertwined stories of the wealthy Loyalist Royall family and the enslaved Africans upon whose labor the family's wealth was built, people who occupied the very highest and the very lowest strata of the social spectrum in a shared setting.
An on-site archaeological exhibit entitled "Parallel Lives, Common Landscape: Artifacts from the Royall House and Slave Quarters" includes rare physical evidence of the 60+ enslaved men, women, and children who supported the wealthy Royalls' lavish lifestyle over a 40-year period in pre-Revolutionary Massachusetts.
