Draw from the enlightened approach to education offered by University of the West. Founded in 1991, UWest is a WASC-accredited campus designed to inspire and prepare students to meet the challenges of a complex and interdependent world. This particular offering is a scholarship for one of the three courses taught by Dr. Lancaster on a for-audit or or-credit basis during the spring, fall or winter semesters, 2009. The winning bidder may choose from one of the following courses:
- XSREL 670 The Spread of Buddhism to Central Asia and China (Spring '09 only)
- XSREL 672 The Spread of Buddhism to Northeast Asia (Fall '09 only)
- XSREL 402T Buddhist Sutras in English: The Prajaparamita (Summer '09 only)
Lewis Lancaster, a specialist in the canons of Buddhist texts, was the first student to complete the Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies at the University of Wisconsin. He taught at the University of California, Berkeley, for 33 years, with five years as Chair. By means of a grant from the National Geographic Society, he and a group of students and faculty inventoried texts in monasteries among the Sherpa people in the Himalayas.
