Description

Art director Liza Matthews happened on a hit when she selected this Guanyin for the May 2006 cover of the Shambhala Sun. Visitors to the Shambhala Sun Foundation's online gallery have made this print their top pick. Liza chose a black background for her presentation of the image. Housed at the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City she says "it is one of the most beautiful depictions I've ever seen of what we would call vajra pride - the powerful proclamation of self-existing enlightenment."

Representative of compassion Guanyin "is sometimes depicted as male, sometimes as female, and in a variety of postures, sometimes with many arms. This seated Guanyin is human-like and very much at ease." The statue comes from the Liao Dynasty (907-1125) in China, a 95" by 65" wooden figure, impeccably preserved.

The Shambhala Sun  Foundation is including this print in the auction owing to its tremendous popularity in the online gallery
