Description
One thing these photographs can't do is capture the satisfying feel of this jug when held. The smooth and cool surface and its weight and shape make it very pleasing to the touch.
The jug comes to us from the collection of Shambhala Sun Foundation supporter Mike Hyman whose appreciation of Native American art prompted him to purchase it in the 1970's. While the jug is not accompanied by a certificate of authenticity a recent unofficial appraisal by a respected specialist in Native American artifacts confirmed, as labelling suggests, that it is Mississippian, "likely made by a Mound Builder culture." The appraisor was sufficiently convinced of its merits from the photographs provided that it was thought worthy of being brought to the attention of certain collectors. The label on the vessel's bottom defines the period of its creation as between 1000 and 1600AD and the location, Lee County, Arkansas.
