Description

In Depth Walking Tours is one of our beloved repeat donors, and is generously contributing another private walking tour for 1 to 40 people. This would be great for an upcoming wedding or bar mitzvah for an out-of-town-guest activity, or for you alone – this is a great idea if you want to ask away, or for you and your pals, or for a whole grade-school class. Learn more in one afternoon than in years of history class! Guide Frederick Cookinham is himself a descendant of a Revolutionary War militiaman. Did you know Cherry Street was where the first White House stood, and blacksmiths and coppersmiths labored about, as their customers' wives tended fine homes with porcelain butter pats and Paul Revere cutlery? There were stores brimming with hop sacks of grain, lodging houses run by the city's many war widows and, for the Olde New York shopaholics, the first Brooks Brothers and Lord & Taylor's. Private tours are usually $30 a person and generally last 2–3 hours, so the more people you bring, the more value your bid gets you. The Revolutionary Downtown tour is wonderful—PS 110 parent Laurie Gwen Shapiro adored this tour and its erudite guide—but do check his website for other Revolutionary tour choices all over the city, like near Washington Heights. Frederick will let you make a substitution if you like. You'll never look at the streets of Manhattan the same way again.Fred has led tours for the Morris-Jumel Mansion, the New-York Historical Society, the Art Deco Society of New York, the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution and Grayline."Lively...extraordinarily educational."--Daughters of the American Revolution"Fred is a kind of poet and street professor...."--Anne Heller, New York Observer
