Description

German-made plate depicting the entrance to the Old Synagogue in St. Thomas.  The history of this Synagogue is fascinating as it is the oldest synagogue in continuous use under a US flag.  The congregation was founded in 1796 by Sephardic Jews who had migrated to escape the Spanish Inquisition.  The Synagogue was twice rebuilt due to fire and was reconsecrated in 1833.  Everything inside this historic building dates back to 1833.  The sanctuary is typical of the Sephardic style of architecture in that congregants face each other, the bimah is opposite the ark and there is a sand floor.  The sand is a reminder of how Marrano Jews muffled the sound of their prayers as they secretly practiced Judaism.  You can learn more by visiting the Synagogue's website or the St. Thomas website.

This is a Live Event Item.
