They were fishermen. The scene in Milano looks like a bunch of tired and seedy characters in bath robes....in an Italian town. The story packs a bigger punch, as Leonardo realized if the setting was familiar ground. Here they are in a setting we can understand. I have found the most ?story telling? of all Bible art was done by naive painters.
