Description

Without doubt, the greatest Jewish baseball player of all time was Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax (sorry Hank Greenberg supporters.) However, Koufax’s most world famous game was one he refused to pitch. It was tk--Yom Kippur--and the Los Angeles Dodgers had their ace lantzmen slated to pitch the first game of that year’s World Series, against the Minnesota Twins. Koufax’s refusal to pitch (and contrary to age-old rumor, he didn’t go to services in St. Paul) electrified the country, especially Jews who now had extra reason to be proud of the young mentsch, especially after his decision meant he had to pitch and win the seventh and deciding game seven and the World Series pitching on only two days rest. For auction is an authentic program for the series sold at Metropolitan Stadium, complete with a full rundown and picture of Sandy. Truly a historic item in Jewish lore.
