Artist Statement: The Four Women Collection was inspired by Nina Simone’s song, Four Women. Saffronia, Sweet Thing, Aunt Sarah and Peaches are the same woman with brilliant colors to distinguish their yellow, tan, brown, and black skin tones. Just as Black women in this country are the same woman, sans skin tone, who view and are viewed by the world through the same gaze. It is not so important how we view the world but how we view ourselves: as beautiful, powerful Black women.

Glodean Champion is a photographer, graphic artist and writer who is new to the art world, yet has made serious inroads in a short time. Her photography and graphic artwork has been shown in several Bay Area galleries and part of the Art of Living Black, San Francisco International Arts Festival, and the San Francisco Black Film Festival. In 2004, after 20+ years in corporate America, she quit her six-figure middle management position to return to the classroom. She received a B.A. from Mills College in ‘06 and an MFA from California College of the Arts in ’08.
