Although the elk catch his eye, the homesteader methodically continues his work. Winter is closing in and there’s a barn to raise. It will take time before he comes to measure his wealth by the richness of the Montana landscape. The herd bull, too, is momentarily distracted, checking the smell of the draft horse and watching the movement of the homesteader. He hears the challenging bugle of a distant bull and dutifully returns to his harem. Then, near the turn of the century, the pioneer stopped working for a moment to take in the landscape, and there was a ghostly stillness. Somehow, during his watch, the elk vanished. With a vengeance he banded together with miners and merchants to bring back the animals and vowed to never let them disappear again. Montana is a vast landscape of differing traditions that mix to form a uniquely Western way of life. Montana is also a small neighborhood formed from closely tied values of community and wildness. A very special place that cannot survive without neighbors keeping an eye out for each other.
