Mert turned Pro in 1963 and was signed as a Harley-Davidson factory racer the following year. After several podium shows, he won his first Grand National championship in 1965. He won another Grand National and was voted AMA Most Popular Racer in 1969. After winning 161 AMA Grand National finishes, he retired from racing in 1977 and signed his portrait in 1997.
